Project Summary

Since 2010 UNDP has been working in partnership with the Ministry of Health and Medical Industry of Turkmenistan to strengthen TB prevention, diagnostics, and treatment through a Global Fund grant. The grant addresses the needs of civilian and penitentiary sectors. Directly Observed Treatment, Short-course (DOTS) is being implemented country-wide, including in prisons. UNDP supported upgrading of TB laboratories, training of laboratory workforce, and expanding access to quality diagnostics. Drug-resistant (DR) TB management improved through increased access to care, the provision of social support for patients, and the conduction of operational research on DR-TB.  The programme has been successful in improving outcomes for people living with TB including helping to reduce TB related mortality from  41 to 9 per 100,000 population between 2000 and 2015.
